I must stress that I have not switched allegiances. As a great fan of the previous champions, I am very happy that reign has been passed on to the most deserving team.
When the Spurs lose during the playoffs, I usually root for the team that beat them. After losing to the Mavericks in 2006, I thought they were going to be the champions. After all, I thought that the Spurs were much better than the Heat. Dwayne Wade proved me wrong. When the Lakers defeated the Spurs, I wanted the Celtics to beat them. Not because I'm a big fan of Garnett, but I'm a die hard Kobe hater. Let me stress that out clearly. I didn't say I hate the Lakers. I said that I don't like Kobe to win it. During the beginning of the season, he was whining about how poor his supporting cast was. If Gasol didn't get traded to the Lakers, would they still won the western conference and Kobe got his MVP.
Enough with Kobe. You can see how much I wanted the Celtics to win. Nine of the Ten ESPN basketball analysts predicted the Lakers to win it in 6 or 7 games. They were definitely wrong. Let us remember that defense win championships. An Garnett was an epitome of defense, duly certified by wining the defensive player of the year. The last time a NBA Defensive Player of the Year became the champion at the same year was Hakeem Olajuwon in the 1993-1994 season. The Celtics have proven that teamwork in defense wins championships. We should thank Kevin McHale and Danny Ainge for their teamwork as general managers as well.
Garnett has also proven that he plays with passion and fury. He has proven it to me by personally visiting Manny Pacquiao after winning his lightweight bout over David Diaz. Imagine a 6'11" American behemoth is a big fan of a 5'6" Filipino boxer, whose head is definitely below his shoulder. A man of fury in the court definitely knows a kindred spirit on the ring and its not measured by height, but by their heart.
Red Auerbach is smiling because Phil Jackson hasn't won a title to eclipse him. Shaq is happy because Kobe couldn't win without him. Kevin McHale has extended the Celtic legacy. To Garnett, Pierce, Allen, Rondo and the rest of the Celtics, Congratulations!
