"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly"
This verse from Jesus may seem so simple, but it reveals a story for all the ages, from the beginning to eternity. Focusing on the second part of the verse, we see the reason why Jesus came to the earth. If Jesus did not come to the earth, we would be dead. Some of us would be startled with the former sentence since we are alive right now and we are breathing.
Looking back at Genesis we first encounter the thief, who is the Devil, in Chapter 3. This is where the serpent tempts Eve to eat of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. A lie said by the devil can be found in the following verse:
The serpent said to the woman, "You will surely not die!"
When Adam and Eve ate the fruit, they did not die instantly; they actually lived through many generations. The death they immediately suffered was the separation from God by sending them out of the garden.
Have you ever felt that God seemed to be out of touch of your life? You might be still feeling the effects of the mistake committed by Adam and Eve. It may seem unfair, but God is holy and just.
God ultimately showed His love for us by letting His son leave heaven to go the earth He created. Jesus fulfilled what His father wanted by dying on the cross. Jesus' final words before dying were, "It is finished!"
With the death of Jesus, we have an opportunity to be close to God once again.
If Jesus said, "It is finished!", then why is the devil still around wreaking havoc in our society and why aren't we all in heaven with God? The answer lies in the first verse.
Christ came to the earth not only to die on the cross. He came so that God would let Him rise from the dead. Many of us picture his death on the cross. Like Jesus, God wants us to rise from the "dead" life. That dead life is a life without a purpose, whose main goal is just to let fate take its course of our existence.
God wants us to experience an abundant life on earth because he gave each one of us a personal destiny for our life. Jesus' life here on earth gave as an ultimate example of an abundant life.
It's like we're back in the Garden of Eden. It was just temporarily closed down and it's original intent and purpose is being executed again. The devil is still around marketing, promoting and selling additional brands of forbidden fruits but there are a lot of fruits from God for us to enjoy. The most encouraging thought is that God has given us a chance to get to know Him more personally as a friend as we live here on earth.
What are the fruits that God have in this life? Blessing in your work, your business, your family, your hobbies, your prayer time, and for the singles out there, your love life! God has all of this in store if you welcome Him in your life.
As you live your abundant life in Christ, God has already prepared your place in heaven. The more we live the abundant life in Christ here on earth, the more we see and know God in our life here and the more we see heaven here on earth.
The story continues. The abundant life is the heart of Alabang Life Club. It is our vision that others may see the beauty of life in Christ and we grow in the image and likeness of Him as we grow together as a church. Everyone in Alabang Life Club celebrates with joy the first year of abundant living.
